course overview

The Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy is the industry-recognised entry qualification for anyone looking to build a career in sports massage and soft tissue therapy.

Delivered in partnership with Sports Therapy Scotland, this course combines evidence-based theory with hands-on clinical training — ensuring you graduate not just with a qualification, but with the practical skills and professional confidence to work with real clients from day one.

The Level 3 is the essential foundation of the Sports Massage pathway. It qualifies you to work in gyms, health clubs, sports clubs and private practice — and is the gateway qualification to progressing to Level 4 and Level 5 advanced clinical practice.

Delivered in collaboration with Sports Therapy Scotland. Our Level 3 Sports Massage course is co-delivered with Sports Therapy Scotland, led by experienced clinical practitioners with extensive backgrounds in sports therapy and rehabilitation.

The course and delivery model is endorsed by the Sports Massage Association (SMA) — the UK's leading professional body for sports massage therapists.

What Is the Level 5 Diploma in Massage Therapy for Sport?

The Level 5 Diploma in Massage Therapy for Sport is the highest qualification available on the Sports Massage Therapy pathway — and it's designed for practitioners who are ready to operate at the very top of their field.

Building on the advanced assessment and treatment skills developed at Level 4, Level 5 introduces the most sophisticated clinical techniques in sports massage practice:

  • Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)

  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Stretching

  • Electrotherapy Applications

  • Sports Taping & Strapping

  • Comprehensive Rehabilitation Planning

Delivered in collaboration with Sports Therapy Scotland across 10 face-to-face sessions over six months in Glasgow, this is a course for therapists who don't just want to be good — they want to be exceptional.

Led by clinical practitioners who work at this level every day across high-performance sport, complex injury management and advanced rehabilitation.

What You'll Develop on the Level 5 Sports Massage Course

Level 5 takes everything you've built at Level 3 and Level 4 and elevates it — developing the clinical depth, technical range and independent judgement that defines an advanced practitioner.

Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) and PNF stretching — expanding your manual therapy toolkit with the most effective advanced stretching methods in clinical practice

Electrotherapy knowledge and application — understanding how to incorporate modalities to support recovery and rehabilitation outcomes

Sports taping and strapping skills to support clients through injury, training load and return to sport

Comprehensive rehabilitation planning for complex and long-term presentations

Advanced clinical reasoning to confidently assess and manage cases that require multi-stage treatment approaches

The skills and credibility to work in high-performance sport, clinical settings and specialist rehabilitation environments

How Is the Level 5 Sports Massage Course Assessed?

Assessment at Level 5 is built differently from Level 3 and 4 — reflecting the way advanced clinical practice actually works.

The primary assessment is an ongoing case study that runs the full length of the course. From your first session to your last, you'll be documenting your clinical reasoning, treatment decisions and client outcomes — building a continuous record of your development as an advanced practitioner. There's no end-of-course exam. Assessment is embedded in your practice from day one.

Within each course block, formative assessments check that you're applying the learning correctly before moving on. These aren't high-stakes tests — they're structured checkpoints designed to support your progress and give you clear tutor feedback at every stage.

The result is an assessment model that mirrors real-world clinical practice: ongoing, reflective and grounded in the work you're doing with real clients throughout the six months.

Is the Level 5 Right for You?

The Level 5 is designed for qualified Sports Massage Therapists with a Level 4 who are committed to reaching the highest level of clinical practice.

This course is ideal if you:

Hold a Level 4 qualification in Sports Massage Therapy and have active client experience

Want to expand your manual therapy toolkit with advanced techniques not covered at Level 4

Work with — or want to work with — athletes, high-performance individuals or complex clinical presentations

Are looking to differentiate yourself from the majority of therapists and build a premium practice

Want to be able to offer rehabilitation planning and return-to-sport support as part of your service

Are working towards or already operating in specialist clinical or sport science environments

You must hold a Level 4 in Sports Massage Therapy to enrol on the Level 5. If you're currently completing your Level 4, speak to our team about planning your Level 5 progression in advance.
