It's the starting point for one of the most versatile careers in the fitness industry. From leisure centres and health clubs to private gyms and boutique studios, qualified gym instructors are in demand across the UK — and this is the qualification that gets you there.
But at MFE, a qualification is only part of what we're building. We're focused on producing gym instructors who don't just meet the standard — they exceed it. Confident, professional and ready to work the moment they graduate. CIMSPA endorsed and awarded by Focus Awards, this qualification is delivered entirely online — flexible, accessible and built to fit around your life.

This course gives you the foundational knowledge and practical skills to plan and deliver safe, effective gym-based exercise for a wide range of clients.
You'll learn how to:
Understand anatomy, physiology and the principles of fitness — giving you the scientific foundation to make informed decisions on the gym floor
Conduct health screening and fitness assessments — so you can understand each client's starting point and adapt your approach accordingly
Plan gym-based exercise programmes appropriate to individual goals, ability levels and health considerations
Instruct and demonstrate a full range of gym-based exercises — with the technique, cuing and confidence to work with members effectively
Apply health, safety and professional practice standards throughout every session you deliver
Motivate and support clients on the gym floor — developing the communication and people skills that keep members engaged, safe and coming back
Build the foundations for progression towards Personal Training — understanding how gym instruction fits into the broader fitness career landscape

Assessment is designed to confirm you're genuinely ready to work on the gym floor — covering both your knowledge and your ability to apply it in practice:
Multiple Choice Exam — Testing your understanding of anatomy, physiology, programme design and the professional standards that underpin effective gym instruction
Written Assignments & Case Studies — Demonstrating your ability to plan, adapt and evaluate gym-based exercise for a range of client scenarios
Filmed Practical Assessment — Your opportunity to show your instructing and delivery skills in a real gym environment, observed and assessed by a qualified tutor
You'll receive clear guidance and feedback at every stage — so you know exactly what's expected before any assessment takes place.

Everything you need to know before you enrol.
No — the Level 2 Certificate in Planning & Delivering Gym-Based Exercise is a true entry-level qualification. No previous fitness qualification, gym experience or formal training background is required. If you're 16 or over and ready to build a career in fitness, this course is your starting point.
Most learners complete the course in four to eight weeks working at a consistent pace — but because it's fully online and self-paced, you can move faster if your schedule allows or take longer if needed. There are no fixed deadlines or cohort timetables. You have up to 2 years from your enrolment date to complete your qualification.
Yes. The Level 2 Certificate in Planning & Delivering Gym-Based Exercise is endorsed by CIMSPA — the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity — and carries 10 CIMSPA CPD points. As a CIMSPA Enhancing Status Education Partner, MFE delivers the qualification to the highest professional standards.
With a Level 2 Gym Instructor Certificate, you're qualified to work on the gym floor in leisure centres, health clubs, private gyms, boutique studios and corporate wellness environments across the UK. You'll be able to apply for professional insurance and begin working with members professionally as soon as you graduate.
Most gyms and leisure centres require instructors to hold a current Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate before working on the floor, and most professional insurance providers require it too. MFE offers the Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work — a CIMSPA endorsed, single-day workshop in Glasgow. If you're not already first aid certified, sorting this alongside your gym instructor qualification means you're fully ready to work the moment you pass.
The Level 2 Gym Instructor Certificate qualifies you to work on the gym floor, instructing members and supporting clients with gym-based exercise. The Level 3 PT Diploma is MFE's combined qualification — covering both Level 2 and Level 3 units in a single programme — and qualifies you to work as a fully qualified Personal Trainer, with the ability to design and deliver 1-2-1 personal training programmes. If you're not yet qualified and your goal is to become a PT, the Level 3 PT Diploma is typically the more direct and efficient route. The Level 2 Certificate is the right starting point if you want to qualify for the gym floor first before progressing, or if you specifically need the standalone Level 2 qualification.
Possibly — yes. If you hold a Level 2 in Group Training, Exercise to Music or the EMD UK Bridge Certification, you may be able to fast-track through certain units by having your prior learning recognised. Speak to our team and we'll assess your existing qualification and map out the most efficient route for you.
The course is £599 in full, or available on a 10-month payment plan at £59.90 per month by Direct Debit. Payment plan enrolment is handled at checkout. ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service) funding applies to Level 3 qualifications and above and cannot be used towards the Level 2 Certificate directly. However, if you're eligible for ELCAS and your goal is to become a Personal Trainer, the Level 3 PT Diploma — which covers both Level 2 and Level 3 units in one qualification — is ELCAS eligible and may be the smarter route. Book a free careers call and we'll help you work out the best option.
The Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training is the natural next step — MFE's online PT qualification designed specifically for qualified gym instructors. It builds directly on your Level 2 foundation and qualifies you to work as a Personal Trainer.
