Gain the nationally recognised qualification to formally assess and verify the competence of learners in your professional field — through flexible distance learning, with no prerequisites and no prior assessor experience required.
CIMSPA Endorsed • Ofqual Regulated • Awarded by Focus Awards

The Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment is the nationally recognised qualification for anyone who assesses — or wants to assess — the practical competence of learners in a vocational or professional setting.
Assessment is a distinct and specialist skill. Watching someone perform a task and accurately judging whether they meet a required standard — consistently, fairly and in accordance with recognised criteria — requires specific knowledge, structured methods and professional accountability. This qualification develops all of that.
Whether you work in fitness education, professional training, apprenticeship assessment or any other vocational context, the Level 3 Assessing Competence award is the credential that makes your assessor role official. CIMSPA endorsed, Ofqual regulated and awarded by Focus Awards — delivered through distance learning with hard copy course manuals and a digital workbook so you can study around your existing professional commitments.

The Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment is endorsed by CIMSPA — the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity — and carries 10 CIMSPA CPD points. Awarded by Focus Awards and regulated by Ofqual, it sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework and is recognised across vocational education, training and assessment environments throughout the UK.
Motion Fitness Education is a CIMSPA Enhancing Status Education Partner — independently recognised for delivering education that raises the standard of the sector. Your assessor qualification carries that credibility from day one.

This course develops the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to assess learner competence accurately, fairly and professionally in a work-based environment.
You'll learn how to:
Understand the principles and practices of assessment — including the different types, purposes and methods of assessment used in vocational and professional contexts
Plan and prepare structured assessment activities that are valid, reliable, fair and fit for purpose
Observe and assess learner performance against defined occupational standards or qualification criteria — making consistent, evidence-based judgements
Collect, evaluate and record a range of assessment evidence — including observations, work products, professional discussions and witness testimonies
Give clear, constructive and developmental feedback to learners following assessment
Make accurate assessment decisions and record outcomes in line with awarding organisation requirements
Understand quality assurance processes and your responsibilities as a qualified assessor
Assessment reflects the nature of the qualification itself — practical, evidence-based and grounded in real assessor practice:
Written Worksheets — Structured tasks completed throughout the course, testing your understanding of assessment theory, methods and professional responsibilities
Observation — A structured observed assessment activity in your own professional context, demonstrating your ability to assess learner competence to the required standard
Full guidance on both elements is provided within your course materials — including how to arrange your observation in a way that fits your professional setting.

Possibly. If you hold the Level 3 AET, there may be unit overlap that qualifies you for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) — meaning you could potentially be exempt from certain elements of the Assessing Competence course and complete it in less time. We are currently working to formalise this pathway with our awarding body. Speak to our team before enrolling and we'll assess your existing qualification, confirm whether RPL applies to your situation and make sure you're on the most efficient route to your assessor award.
No — the Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment is open to all. No prior assessor training, formal teaching qualification or experience in vocational assessment is required. You will need to be working in — or have access to — a professional context in which you can carry out an observed assessment activity to complete the qualification.
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment is the current national standard for vocational assessors, replacing the legacy D32/D33 units and the CAVA (Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement) at this level. If you hold one of these older qualifications, it may still be recognised by some organisations — but the Level 3 Award is what awarding organisations and training providers now require for new assessors.
Yes — because assessment is a practical skill, the qualification requires you to carry out an observed assessment activity with real learners in your professional context. You'll need access to individuals whose competence you can formally assess. Full guidance on how to set this up, what's required and how the observation is structured is included in your course materials. If you're unsure whether your current situation gives you what you need, it's worth booking a free call with our team — we can talk through your qualifications, your professional context and what you'd be assessing, to make sure this course is the right fit before you enrol.
The Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence qualifies you to assess learner competence in your area of professional expertise, in accordance with the standards and requirements of the relevant awarding organisation. You should always confirm with the specific awarding organisation or training provider what their assessor requirements are, as some may have additional expectations beyond the Level 3 award.
