You're already teaching. You know your format inside out. Now get the regulated qualification that fills the knowledge gap, meets EMD UK membership requirements and gives you the professional standing your teaching deserves.
EMD UK Endorsed • Ofqual Regulated • Awarded by YMCA Awards

The YMCA Level 2 Award in Anatomy, Physiology and Fitness Principles for EMD UK Professional Membership is the regulated qualification designed for group exercise instructors who already teach licensed or pre-choreographed formats — but whose training hasn't been delivered within the regulated qualifications framework.
If you teach Les Mills BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, Zumba, SH1FT Fitness, Clubbercise, DRUMBA or any other licensed group exercise programme, you'll know the moves, the music and the format in detail. What that training doesn't always provide is the underpinning knowledge — anatomy, physiology and fitness principles — assessed and verified against national qualification standards. That's the gap this course closes.
By completing this qualification, you gain the additional formal knowledge required to meet the minimum requirements for EMD UK professional membership. EMD UK is the national governing body for group exercise in the UK — and membership gives you the professional recognition, credibility and industry standing that licensed training alone can't provide.

EMD UK is the national governing body for group exercise and dance fitness in the UK. Professional membership signals to venues, employers and clients that you meet a recognised minimum standard of knowledge and professionalism — not just that you've completed a brand's own instructor training.
Many gyms, leisure centres and studios are increasingly asking instructors to demonstrate EMD UK membership alongside their licensed format certifications. It's the regulated layer that gives your teaching professional standing in the broader fitness industry — and this qualification is the route to getting it.

This course develops the underpinning knowledge that professional group exercise instruction requires — the anatomy, physiology and fitness principles that sit behind the formats you already teach.
You'll cover:
Anatomy and physiology relevant to group exercise — understanding how the body works during physical activity and why that matters for the sessions you deliver
The principles of fitness and physical conditioning — including the components of fitness, principles of training and how the body adapts to exercise over time
How the knowledge you gain maps directly onto the formats you're already teaching — reinforcing and deepening your understanding of why your sessions work

Assessment is online and designed to confirm your understanding of the underpinning knowledge this qualification covers:
Multiple Choice Exam — Testing your knowledge of anatomy, physiology and fitness principles as they apply to group exercise instruction
Written Worksheet — Demonstrating your ability to apply that knowledge to real group exercise scenarios
You'll receive clear guidance before each assessment — so you know exactly what to expect.

This qualification is specifically designed for group exercise instructors who are already teaching licensed or pre-choreographed formats and want to gain the regulated qualification required for EMD UK professional membership.
This course is ideal if you:
Already teach a licensed group exercise format — such as Les Mills BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, Zumba, SH1FT Fitness, Clubbercise, DRUMBA or similar programmes

Are working in gyms or studios that are increasingly asking for EMD UK membership alongside your licensed instructor certifications
Want to formalise and deepen the underpinning knowledge behind the formats you're already delivering
Are considering progressing to a full Level 2 Group Training qualification in the future

Licensed format training — from Les Mills, Zumba, Clubbercise, DRUMBA, SH1FT Fitness and others — is excellent preparation for delivering that specific programme. What it doesn't provide is a regulated qualification with formally assessed underpinning knowledge in anatomy, physiology and fitness principles. Without a regulated qualification, you're not eligible for EMD UK professional membership — and an increasing number of venues and insurance providers expect to see that membership alongside your licensed certifications. The Bridge closes that gap efficiently and affordably.
EMD UK is the national governing body for group exercise and dance fitness in the UK. EMD UK professional membership demonstrates that you meet a recognised minimum standard of knowledge as a group exercise instructor — beyond what licensed format training alone covers. Membership is increasingly expected by gyms, leisure centres and fitness facilities as evidence of professional credibility, and it provides access to CPD, guidance and support as your career develops.
Completing this qualification meets the regulated qualification requirement for EMD UK professional membership. You'll still need to apply directly to EMD UK for membership once you've qualified — but this course provides the credential you need to meet their minimum qualification standard. Full guidance on the membership application process is available on the EMD UK website.
This course is relevant for instructors of any licensed or pre-choreographed group exercise format where the training provided was not delivered within the Ofqual regulated qualifications framework. If you're unsure whether your specific qualification is covered, speak to our team before enrolling.
