The essential first aid qualification for fitness professionals — and anyone who needs to be prepared to respond to an emergency. CIMSPA endorsed, nationally recognised, and completed in one six-hour workshop.
CIMSPA Endorsed • Ofqual Regulated • Awarded by Focus Awards

The Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is the standard first aid qualification required by most employers, venues and professional insurance providers across the UK — and it's completed in a single six-hour day.
For fitness professionals, it's not optional. Most gyms, leisure centres and studios require you to hold a current first aid certificate before you step in front of a class or onto the gym floor — and most insurance providers require it before they'll cover you. Whether you're completing this alongside a fitness qualification or renewing a certificate that's due to expire, this is the course you need.
CIMSPA endorsed and awarded by Focus Awards, the Level 3 EFAW carries 3 CIMSPA CPD points — making it the smartest way to meet your mandatory first aid requirement and advance your professional development at the same time.

This course is endorsed by CIMSPA — the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, the professional body for the UK fitness and physical activity sector. The Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work carries 3 CIMSPA CPD points, recognising it as a meaningful contribution to your continuing professional development.
Motion Fitness Education is also a CIMSPA Enhancing Status Education Partner — independently recognised for delivering education that raises the standard of the sector. Your first aid certificate carries that credibility from day one.

In one focused day, you'll develop the knowledge and practical skills to manage a range of emergency first aid situations confidently and safely.
You'll learn how to:
Perform CPR on adults and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) correctly
Manage an unconscious casualty — including placing them safely in the recovery position
Respond to choking in adults — recognising the emergency and taking effective action
Control and manage external bleeding — including the use of dressings and pressure
Recognise and respond to shock, seizures, and anaphylaxis
Deal with burns, scalds, fractures and other common first aid scenarios
Understand your roles, responsibilities and legal duties as a first aider in a workplace or fitness setting

Assessment takes place on the day and is designed to be straightforward and supportive:
Written Worksheet — A short written task covering your understanding of first aid principles, roles and responsibilities
Practical Skills Assessment — Demonstrating key first aid techniques including CPR, recovery position and emergency response scenarios under tutor observation, assessed both throughout the day and at the end of the session
Everything is assessed on the day — there's nothing to prepare or submit in advance. Your tutor guides you through each stage and gives you feedback as you go, so you arrive, participate and leave qualified.

Everything you need to know before you book your place.
In most cases, yes. The majority of gyms, leisure centres, studios and outdoor fitness operators require instructors to hold a current Emergency First Aid at Work certificate as a condition of working on their premises. Most professional insurance providers for fitness instructors also require it before they will issue a policy. The Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is the qualification that meets both requirements.
Yes — and in most cases your insurance provider will require it before they'll cover you to work with clients. Whether you're training clients in a gym, outdoors or in their home, professional public liability and professional indemnity insurance is essential, and the Emergency First Aid at Work certificate is a standard condition of most fitness instructor policies. Gyms and leisure centres also typically require all self-employed PTs on their floor to hold a current EFAW certificate. If you're completing your Level 3 PT qualification with MFE, getting your first aid certificate sorted at the same time is the simplest way to make sure you're ready to start seeing paying clients as soon as you qualify.
Yes. Professional insurance for Sports Massage Therapists — which you must hold to practice — typically requires you to hold a current first aid certificate. Working in a clinical or treatment context means you're responsible for your clients' welfare during and after sessions, and insurers expect you to be equipped to respond to a medical emergency if one arises. The Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work satisfies this requirement and is exactly what most insurance providers in the sports massage and soft tissue therapy sector are looking for.
Yes — both for professional insurance and for the studios and venues you'll want to work in. Whether you're teaching Matwork or Reformer sessions, insurance providers will typically require a current EFAW certificate as a condition of your policy, and most studios require instructors to hold one before taking classes. If you're completing your Level 3 Matwork or Reformer Pilates qualification with MFE, pairing it with your EFAW is a practical and cost-effective way to arrive at qualification day fully ready to work.
The Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is the one-day qualification that meets the standard requirement for fitness professionals and most workplace settings. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a more comprehensive three-day qualification typically required for appointed first aiders in larger workplaces or organisations with higher-risk environments. For the vast majority of fitness instructors and personal trainers, the EFAW is exactly what you need.
MFE does also deliver the full First Aid at Work qualification — but as a bespoke, in-house training solution for businesses and organisations rather than a public course. If you're an employer, gym operator or studio owner looking to train your team to FAW standard on-site, get in touch and we'll put together a tailored solution for you.
Your EFAW certificate is valid for three years from the date of completion. After three years, you'll need to complete a renewal course to keep your certification current and maintain your professional cover. It's worth setting a reminder well before your certificate expires — most venues and insurers require a current certificate to remain active on their books.
Yes. The Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is endorsed by CIMSPA — the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity — and carries 3 CIMSPA CPD points. This makes it one of the few first aid qualifications that actively contributes to your continuing professional development record as a fitness professional. As a CIMSPA Enhancing Status Education Partner, MFE delivers this qualification to the highest professional standards.
Absolutely. The Level 3 EFAW is designed for people with no prior first aid training — the entire course is built around teaching you the essential skills from the ground up. No background in first aid, healthcare or fitness is required. The only prerequisite is that you are 16 or over.
Your EFAW workshop runs for approximately six hours, covering both theory and hands-on practical skills. You'll work through a structured programme of first aid scenarios, techniques and knowledge — with your tutor guiding you through each section and giving you feedback as you go. Assessment is built into the day, so there's nothing separate to prepare for in advance. Come ready to participate, ask questions and get hands on.
Yes — the Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is the standard qualification recognised by professional insurance providers across the UK fitness and physical activity sector. It satisfies the first aid condition of the vast majority of fitness instructor insurance policies. If you're unsure whether your specific insurer accepts this qualification, we recommend checking directly with them before booking.
